This Week Nicole Recommends:
There are a lot of good things out this week. Let’s start with the return of a super fun sword and sorcery tale:
HEAD LOPPER #5
(W/A) Andrew MacLean (CA) Tony Sandoval
NEW STORY ARC! “IN THE SHADOW OF THE TOWER”-Norgal and Agatha are back! A daring new adventure awaits, looming like the Crimson Tower, home of Ulrich the Twice Damned, sworn enemy of Zhaania Kota Ka. With old friends and new, our heroes boldly enter the bloodied pinnacle with bare steel and steady hearts. The quarterly series HEAD LOPPER has returned!
Note: If you need to get caught up, the Trade for the first volume will get you current to this issue. $19.99 for 280 pages is a great deal!
(W) Marguerite Bennett, James TynionIV (A/CA) Steve Epting
“The Many Arms Of Death” part one! At last – Batwoman is back in her own ongoing series! On the island nation of Coryana, anything goes for members of the criminal underworld… and during her lost years after being drummed out of the military, Kate Kane found a kind of refuge there. But now, a deadly new bioweapon is available in the markets of Coryana, and Batwoman will have to face up to the things she did in those days… and the people she left behind, some of whom would be happier to see her dead than alive! Writer Marguerite Bennett (DC BOMBSHELLS) is joined by James Tynion IV (DETECTIVE COMICS) and superstar artist Steve Epting (Captain America, Velvet) to present an epic Batwoman story that will alter the course of her life forever! This one’s unmissable!
Note: Having hope for the new Batwoman title is wonderful. This issue starts the first chapter of this story arc. I recommend you pick up Batwoman Rebirth #1 & Monster Men HC to get some background on what they are building in this title. Also recommended, but not required, is some of the previous Batwoman stories of Greg Rucka’s run. All books pictured below.
BLACK PANTHER WORLD OF WAKANDA #5
(W) Roxane Gay (A) Alitha Martinez (CA) Jen Bartel
DAWN OF THE MIDNIGHT ANGELS: CONCLUSION!
• Officers. Rebels. Lovers…Ayo and Aneka, a.k.a. the Midnight Angels, now have new monikers thrust upon them: Leaders. Rated T+
Note: If you follow my Recommends series or Hardcore Lady Types, you already know I love this title. World of Wakanda takes place before the events in Coates’ Black Panther. It follows the midnight Angels and how they got to the point they did. It’s exciting, griping and emotional. I can’t get enough of it! Also, I chose the Jen Bartel cover instead of the main cover because just look at it. If you’ve missed this series or prefer trade paperbacks to singles the trade is scheduled for release on 6/14/2017. Looks like June 14th will have a lot of good releases!
SUPER SONS #2
(W) Peter J. Tomasi (A/CA) Jorge Jimenez
“When I Grow Up” part two! Robin and Superboy – in the clutches of Lex Luthor! The boys are in big trouble! How exactly are they supposed to explain what’s happened to Superman and Batman? Plus, Kid Amazo’s power grows, and this tyrant in the making is about to make life miserable for the Super Sons!
Note: We find out more about Kid Amazo in this issue, the main antagonist to this arc. Jon and Damian are my current favorite duo (odd couple) and I hope this title can maintain the fun from their introduction in the main Superman comic.
Happy New Comic Book Day Everyone!
