This is an all-age friendly coming-of-age tale in the style of books like Smile.
In this story, the main protagonist, Astrid, finds Roller Derby her new passion (thanks to her mom’s interest in showing her many different cultures/art). Meanwhile, her best friend finds boys, make-up and the mall her new passion. There’s an inevitable shift in their friendship, one that Astrid is not quite willing to face or admit.
This story is one that is relate-able. Everyone has a time between adolescence and puberty where we’ve start to form our own interests, what will be the defining moments of who we become onward into high school and beyond. it may manifest as new friends, hobbies, style of clothing, etc. Regardless, it is a clear division between childhood and adolescence. Because of this, it is a compelling story that had me awestruck by the emotional truth of the character and the characters around her. It’s as if I was thrust back in time and experiencing it for myself. It gave me so many feels!! If you like the coming of age female-driven genre of stories then this is a MUST! Really. Seriously. For real. Indeed. And how!

Generally, I like their stories and the political comics they put out. However, the art isn’t always so great. Not so on on this one! It makes me happy to finally see a quality Black Mask comic get popular. With Josh Hood on Art, this is the first comic I’ve read from Black Mask that I think the story and art are a great fit and even so much to say spot on.
Plot is as such: 2 teens cross paths, Madison one a popular girl, and the other Duncan a loner boy who tends to get picked on. Turns out, Madison has superpowers. Things go awry and before they know it someone is dead and they are on the run. A worn out mix tape with hardcore songs is the soundtrack to this wild ride.
This is still ongoing and will be for 5 issues total. I would normally recommend getting this in trade as Black Mask tends to have lower print runs through diamond distributor. However, this series has been so popular that #1-3 are going to 2nd Print! They are in stock now!
