Hardcore Lady Types is an article series focused on female-fronted comics and highlighting female creators giving them more spotlight time.
Women of the Industry
Artist: Lady Killer
Joelle Jones is part of Periscope Studios in Portland (where the awesome folks go like Jeff Parker, Erica Moen and Ben Dewey just to name a few). Jone’s art has also graced the pages of Helheim, Adventures of Superman and the graphic novel The Girl Who Owned A City. Jone’s current project Lady Killer has been flying off the shelves. Her throwback 50’s style in this crime comic is spot on. Though it’s a ways away, I am looking forward to the trade release of this series. 1st prints of #1 and #2 are now out of print and the 2nd prints are on their way to print Valhalla as well. I hope this sparks more work for this clearly talented woman of the industry!
Artist: Cover of Curb Stomp
Cool things about Tula is (1) she does covers for Italian horror movies. (2) She’s done work on Bodies, Supreme Blue Rose, Elephantmen and Fairest. (3) And most recently you’d recognize her from doing the cover of Curb Stomp #1. I hope to be seeing consistently more and more of her work in comics. Look for her cover art of the upcoming dynamite series Swords of Sorrow. Be sure to check out the Trusty Henchmen’s article about her too.
Writer & Artist: Hinges
I bought one of my first variants because of McClaren’s art. It’s this Adventure Time Cover. Recently she just released the softcover of her book Hinges. Drawn and Written by her, it’s a beautiful and haunting world, where the folks of Clockwork City, called Cobbles get paired with an Odd, a living stuffed animal. The main protagonist, Orio, begins her journey integrating into this town, paired with a clumsy odd, Bauble they begin to make their way. McClaren has you learn about the world through this assimilation and still leaves an air of mystery as to who Orio is and why she’s there. McClaren’s art style blends computer graphics, simple pen and ink with ragdoll/marienette characters and sometimes a paper doll feel. You can scope out more of this story here or pick up the comic at our store! Also check out McClaren’s personal art journal Scraps.
And if you are teetering on the conversation “Oh, that looks good, but maybe I might check that out later.” then here’s the place where you say yes. Nimona gets accepted to be a henchmen based on her shapeshifting abilities. Aaaand… shark boobs.
For the Honor of Greyskull!
