This Week In Comics:
This week’s recommendations are for one title only… SHUTTER!!
Artist of the week goes to Leila del Duca!
As part of our Introductory Program we are offering the awesome trade of Shutter Vol 1.
(through the 16th – That’s this coming TUESDAY – it’s only $5)
Why I Recommend This:
Many reasons… So many reasons. Joe Keatinge writes an interesting tale of Kate, a young woman who comes from a family of famous explorers, now just living a normal, supposedly quiet life when everything turns upside down when she finds all sorts of characters coming out of the woodwork to get her. Leila del Duca paints a unique world, full of anthropomorphic characters like lion assassins, a woman who resemble the joker, steampunk robots, ghost ninjas, a skeleton butler and so much more! The amount of characters that del Duca packs into this world is phenomenal and really adds something unique and exciting to the story.
1) When Your Good-Natured Childhood Goes Bad….
This is the issue that completely won me over on the series. Why? Oh because Joe Keatinge and Leila del Duca decided to use Richard Scary’s World as the picture of this story. It starts with a run-down ex-hit-man, dealing with a costly and miserable divorce, decides to do one last hit so as to move on with his life. It ‘s an instant and heart-wrenching win. IF that can be a thing. It is a thing.
2) On The Sly with Gender Identity:
Kate’s best friend has a back story that isn’t blatantly blurted out. You learn some of her story through Del Duca’s art more than with any of Keatinge’s words, within just a couple panels. Alain, a transgender woman, finds acceptance and companionship in Kate during childhood and the two are seemingly inseparable ever since. Though Alain’s story isn’t totally flushed out (like, what is her adult life like? I want to know), it is nice to see this background as it deepens the character development and had me care about the characters.
(Note: Some dialog has been omitted to avoid any spoilers)
SIDE NOTE: Please write more transgender-fronted characters in general please & thank you! I want those stories in this shop stat!
3) Good Ol’ Anthropomorphic & Distinctive Characters…
Oh, but not just any kind, there’s lions, rats, platypus, lizards… Oh my! And a talking robot Felix the Cat clock…. They use so many awesome literary tools that make this a really stand out comic. The characters are many, their stories complex. There’s usually a comic within a comic in every issue, offering a diversity that to me is not only fulfilling but leaves me with an experience of “what ELSE are they going to do in this book??!”
Even if you miss our intro sale no worries! Image is SO awesome that the book is only $9.99 for this first must-have volume. Come into the store to grab a copy or you may purchase one (or more) right from our new webstore!
