Mercenary Sea, X-Force, & Astro City
Mercenary Sea #1– The simplicity of the art style would appeal to me more if the figures and story flow didn’t come off as static and stiff. The strength of Mathew Reynold’s artwork is in his coloring as his lush textures and subtle tonal shifts mask the sadly dull storytelling. There’s nothing in the script or plot that makes up for that dullness either as you sit through a fairly typical story of mercenaries doing mercenary things in the Pacific in 1938.

Beautiful Darkness, The Royals, & Winter Soldier
Beautiful Darkness HC- If you are in the mood for a stunningly painted yet horribly creepy and depressing fairy tale then you really need to give this book a look. The story is a hodgepodge of styles (think Alice In Wonderland, Moomin, Tezuka, Lord of the Flies, and the Borrowers thrown into a violent blender), following a group of characters that quickly reveal the worst aspects of the human condition as they are thrust into the brutal natural world.
